Warning: Spoilers for The Batman!

Matt Reeves' The Batman filmed all over the world to bring a new version of Gotham to life and went to some prominent real-life locations to achieve the right look. Another new interpretation of the Dark Knight in live-action meant introducing audiences to Robert Pattinson's Batman and the world that he inhabits. While this included bringing Penguin, Catwoman, and other DC Comics characters to life, The Batman truly makes Gotham City a character of its own. One of the best ways the movie pulls off creating a new version of Gotham was by filming on location.

Throughout the decades of movies starring Batman, filmmakers have had the challenge of creating distinct looks for Gotham. The fictional DC city that Batman protects is typically depicted as being part of New Jersey in the comics, while New York and Chicago heavily influenced the visual style. However, Tim Burton heavily leaned on England, Christopher Nolan used Chicago, and Zack Snyder brought Batman to Detroit. When it comes to The Batman, Matt Reeves primarily used the UK and Chicago to get the cold, gothic, and old look of Gotham he desired.

The Batman did its best to film in real-life locations, although prominent movie locations like the Batcave and Wayne Tower were built as sets on studio lots. When the movie was filming on location, the cast and crew mostly stayed in the UK to film the biggest Gotham locations. The Batman's Chicago section of filming was done primarily with the second-unit crew to film exteriors, while various UK countries doubled as Gotham. Here are all the real-life locations The Batman filmed at to create Gotham.

The Batman's entrance to the Batcave was filmed in London, England. Although the interior of the Batcave was a custom-built set for Matt Reeves' movie, he used the Kingsway Tram Tunnel as the entrance to Bruce Wayne's secret hideout. Robert Pattinson's Batman could be seen riding his motorcycle down the ramp and into the tram tunnels, which led him to the secure Batcave entrance.

Gotham Cemetery – Necropolis Cemetery, Glasgow, Scotland

Gotham's cemetery was brought to life using two The Batman filming locations. This included filming portions of scenes at the cemetery in Glasgow, Scotland. The crew traveled to the Necropolis Cemetery, a Victorian cemetery founded in 1832. The Batman used this location to film Batman and Catwoman's interaction at the end of the movie, including them both leaving the cemetery on their motorcycles.

Gotham Cemetery – Anfield Cemetery, Liverpool, England

The other half of The Batman's filming location to bring Gotham's cemetery to life was the Anfield Cemetery. It is located in Liverpool, England, and was established in 1863. This second cemetery was also used to film Batman and Catwoman's motorcycle chase.

The Batman also filmed on location at the County Sessions House in Liverpool, England. This location was used to double as the Gotham Central Court House. This was a fitting filming location for The Batman as the County Sessions House is a former courthouse. The building was featured in the heart of Gotham and next to other settings Matt Reeves used.

Gotham City Hall – St. George's Hall, Liverpool, England

St. George's Hall in Liverpool, England, was transformed into the Gotham City Hall as another prominent The Batman filming location. The building was the home for the funeral of Gotham's former mayor Don Mitchell. The Batman filmed outside of St. George's Hall to capture Bruce Wayne's arrival at the funeral and parts of the mayhem that occurred after District Attorney Gil Colson drove a car through the front of the building.

Gotham City Police Department – Royal Liver Building, Liverpool, England

When it came to filming at the Gotham City Police Department, The Batman's filming location for this set became the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool, England. The key sequence from the movie involving this location was when Batman had to fight his way out of the GCPD. This included him jumping off the top of the Royal Liver Building and gliding through the streets of Gotham momentarily.

Gotham General Hospital – Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, England

The Batman also transformed the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, England, into the Gotham General Hospital. This is where Alfred Pennyworth remains after being injured in one of Riddler's plans. The hospital wasn't a prominent The Batman filming location, although it was located near Gotham's Court House and City Hall.

Matt Reeves also took The Batman's crew to a deserted location for filming. The abandoned building in Shotts, Scotland that previously was the Hartwood Psychiatric Hospital, transformed into a Gotham orphanage. The deserted hospital became an abandoned orphanage for The Batman, where drug addicts remained. This was also the location where Batman and Jim Gordon learned that Bruce Wayne was Riddler's next target.

Gotham Square – Wellington Square, Liverpool, England

The entirety of Wellington Square in Liverpool, England was used as The Batman's filming location to create what is known as Gotham Square. Although the real-life Wellington Square doesn't have nearly as many billboards, The Batman added those in to make this Gotham's equivalent of Times Square. The column featured in the middle is known as Wellington's Column and is a monument for the Duke of Wellington. As the epicenter of Gotham and the home of many other buildings listed above, Gotham Square was quite prominently featured in the movie. This included The Batman's opening for Halloween and showing various citizens dressed in their costumes.

Iceberg Lounge – Printworks Nightclub, London, England

One of the iconic DC locations included in The Batman is the Iceberg Lounge, a Gotham nightclub run by Oswald Cobblepot. When it came to creating a live-action version of Penguin's club, a real club in London, England was used as the basis for it. The Batman's filming location for Iceberg Lounge was Printworks Nightclub, which used to be a newspaper printing building.

Mayor Don Mitchell's House – Two Temple Place, London, England

The London location known as Two Temple Place served as another The Batman filming location. Two Temple Place was the first building seen in the movie, in fact, as it was the home of Gotham's Mayor Don Mitchell. Matt Reeves began The Batman by showing the location through Riddler's eyes. Two Temple Place then became a major location for the movie as Mitchell's house emerged as the first crime scene for one of Riddler's victims.

Who Are All The Batman Actors

Batman is undeniably one of the most beloved and revered pop culture figures of all time. Few comic book superheroes have found as great a success in film and television as the caped crusader has. His introduction to the masses stems all the way back to 1943, in the 15-chapter theatrical serial Batman starring Lewis Wilson. The episodic short films are notable for being the first appearance of Batman in cinema and spawned another 1949 serial Batman and Robin, this time with Robert Lowery. After a brief lull in Hollywood, the DC character returned to screens with a bang (or maybe a 'kapow') in the 1960s Adam West-led Batman series. The campy and light-hearted show became an instant classic and to this day is adored for its whimsical portrayal of the hero.

Which Villain Did Jim Carrey Play In Batman Forever

Jim Carrey's Riddler in Batman Forever was a perfect incarnation of the villain - even better than Paul Dano's take on the character for The Batman. While Joel Schumacher's Batman films may have left a lot to be desired in some aspects, they weren't entirely without merit. In fact, one of the best decisions Schumacher made in his Batman films was casting Jim Carrey as the Riddler in 1995's Batman Forever.

They may even know that Robin was apart of the Teen Titans for a while in between his crime-fighting adventures with the Dark Knight. But many of those who aren't die-hard fans don't realize that there is actually more than one Robin, more than two even.

Here’s How To Watch The DC Movies In Chronological Order

If the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an intricate puzzle in which each piece finds its perfect place, the DC Universe is a Gordian knot, complicated by aborted overarching storytelling plans and less continuity in more recent films. There is certainly a way to watch the DC movies in order, but you’ll find some films make more sense than others, while some feel completely disconnected from the DCEU at large. This is no fault of the filmmakers, of course, as Warner Bros. was playing catch-up with the MCU and trying to build to their own team-up movie “Justice League” as quickly as possible, resulting in a bit of a slapdash approach to universe-building.
