Reading: Batman V Superman Easter Egg Reveals Robin'S Brutal Manner Of Death

Just when you think Zack Snyder's dark and brooding DC Extended Universe couldn't get any more grim, a minute detail from 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has hinted at the horrific way Robin died. With whispers that the upcoming Snyder Cut of the director's Justice League could see this moment play out via flashback, fans had better cover their eyes. It isn't going to be pretty.

Although there have been several characters to take on the mantle of Robin in DC Comics, the DCEU picked up Batman's story with a battered and bruised Bruce Wayne living in a post-Robin world and mourning the loss of his former comrade.

In the comics, it was Jason Todd who died in the line of duty, and while this was later retconned, his "death" at the hands of the Joker remains a defining moment in DC history. Snyder put his own twist on the tale in BvS and confirmed Dick Grayson was the one who tragically lost his life.

It's been long-established that the OG Robin died in the DCEU, but now, one of Batman v Superman's designers has revealed the brutal way it happened. Posting on Instagram, costume designer Douglas J Stewart said Joker murdered Grayson and then set his body on fire – hence the charred costume seen in the background of the movie. Stewart explained, "A bit of detail on Robin's gauntlet. He was brutally murdered and then set ablaze by the Joker. The story had to be told in the salvaged costume on display inside the Batcave."

It's a typically Snyder-esque way to handle the source material and shouldn't come as a major surprise to those who are used to the franchise's high body count.

From Antiope to Jimmy Olsen, Jonathan Kent to the Waynes, no-one was safe. Of course, the death of Robin proved to be a crucial part of the DCEU despite the fact it happened off-screen.

More than Robin's death just being a throwaway Easter egg, it had a knock-on effect on the rest of the DCEU as part of Snyder's master plan. Importantly, there's been no sign of Robin, meaning this would leave the door open to any number of A-list celebrities to step into those iconic boots as part of the Dynamic Duo.

Suicide SquadDC Comics

When it came to David Ayer's Suicide Squad, Joker's signature metal grill was because Batman knocked his teeth out in a rage-filled act of vengeance for Robin's demise. The pitch-black tone of Snyder's DCEU jarred against Ayer's neon-splashed Suicide Squad the same year as Batman v Superman, while Jared Leto's Joker didn't quite translate properly onto the screen.

Aside from there being a lot of support for the star's performance – and reports he's returning for the Snyder Cut – many felt he fell short of playing the Clown Prince of Crime. Even though it sounds like Snyder took influence from Todd being beaten to death with a crowbar in the acclaimed Batman: A Death in the Family, he took it one step further by giving Dick a fiery farewell.

Warner Bros.

Whether Robin's death will be shown in the Snyder Cut or not, it would be a missed opportunity if the director didn't flesh out the fallen hero's backstory. Alongside previous hints from Snyder that he'd revisit Robin's death, the rumour mill went into overdrive following the latest reveal.

On Vero, one fan put the pieces together and suggested that Robin's burned suit fits with the idea that the horrible event took place in Wayne Manor, which led to Bruce's ancestral home looking the way it does in the DCEU. If that's the case, another fan pointed out Leto's Joker would've known Batman's identity and kept a secret as part of a twisted back and forth. The whole tin foil hat theory caught the attention of Snyder, who simply responded: "Would be interesting to see this."

Instead of being the resurrection of the DCEU that many had hoped for, Snyder has repeatedly said his three-and-a-half-hour Justice League cut will mark the end of the franchise.

Despite originally wanting to tell an epic three-movie arc for the team of superheroes, Snyder's plans were cut short when he stepped away from Justice League for personal reasons and Joss Whedon took over post-production.

In the end, Snyder and Whedon shared directorial credit, Justice League bombed at the box office, and interest was sparked in #ReleasetheSnyderCut. When it comes to Robin, Joker, and even Ben Affleck's Batman, it could be a last chance saloon for tying up all those loose ends with Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Who Are All The Batman Actors

Batman is undeniably one of the most beloved and revered pop culture figures of all time. Few comic book superheroes have found as great a success in film and television as the caped crusader has. His introduction to the masses stems all the way back to 1943, in the 15-chapter theatrical serial Batman starring Lewis Wilson. The episodic short films are notable for being the first appearance of Batman in cinema and spawned another 1949 serial Batman and Robin, this time with Robert Lowery. After a brief lull in Hollywood, the DC character returned to screens with a bang (or maybe a 'kapow') in the 1960s Adam West-led Batman series. The campy and light-hearted show became an instant classic and to this day is adored for its whimsical portrayal of the hero.

Which Villain Did Jim Carrey Play In Batman Forever

Jim Carrey's Riddler in Batman Forever was a perfect incarnation of the villain - even better than Paul Dano's take on the character for The Batman. While Joel Schumacher's Batman films may have left a lot to be desired in some aspects, they weren't entirely without merit. In fact, one of the best decisions Schumacher made in his Batman films was casting Jim Carrey as the Riddler in 1995's Batman Forever.

6 Reasons Why Robin Is The Best Part Of ‘Lego Batman’

Dick Grayson has been an essential part of the Batman story since its first onscreen romp. Burt Ward portrayed Robin, Batman’s ward and sidekick, in 1966’s Batman: The Movie and the original television series based on the film and the DC comics. Now, The Lego Batman Movie follows the story of Batman and Robin as they hustle to save Gotham from the Joker and a host of other bad guys — and, Robin is the best part of the whole movie.

Which Robin Becomes Batman

Everyone knows Robin as the Boy Wonder, the sidekick to the Caped Crusader, Batman. They may even know that Robin was apart of the Teen Titans for a while in between his crime-fighting adventures with the Dark Knight. But many of those who aren't die-hard fans don't realize that there is actually more than one Robin, more than two even.

Here’s How To Watch The DC Movies In Chronological Order

If the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an intricate puzzle in which each piece finds its perfect place, the DC Universe is a Gordian knot, complicated by aborted overarching storytelling plans and less continuity in more recent films. There is certainly a way to watch the DC movies in order, but you’ll find some films make more sense than others, while some feel completely disconnected from the DCEU at large. This is no fault of the filmmakers, of course, as Warner Bros. was playing catch-up with the MCU and trying to build to their own team-up movie “Justice League” as quickly as possible, resulting in a bit of a slapdash approach to universe-building.
